Share An Hour Mentoring Program "Who is the person who brought a little 'magic' into your life, growing up?" Through the Share an Hour Mentoring Program by the Springfield Rotary/Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentorship Collaboration, citizens of the area have been able to be a friend to the youth of our community. They share everyday activities—exploring new horizons, and experiencing the joy that simple moments of friendship can bring. Within those moments there is magic that can bring to the life of a young person.
"The Fulton Mentoring Project has been a terrific experience for many of us who otherwise have few opportunities to interact with young children after our own have grown," stated Chuck Dominick, VP for University Advancement at Wittenberg University and mentor in the project. "I was amazed that my Fulton third grader looked forward to our time together with such enthusiasm—an enthusiasm that I shared. Many of the children in the program seemed starved for some positive adult attention, and it was very humbling and rewarding to learn just how much they valued the relationship."
By simply being a friend to a student at Fulton Elementary School for a few hours a month, you can create a rich experience for yourself and provide hope and magic into the life of that child. The only requirements are a willingness to make a new friend and a desire to share some fun with a young person. Our volunteers consistently say that being a mentor is even more enjoyable and fulfilling than for the mentee. "At first I wondered if I would make a good mentor for a third grader with whom I had nothing in common. But after our very first meeting, I knew that my 'little [sister]' was a perfect match for me," stated Jean Chepp of Springfield Rotary Club.
Please consider joining the community-supported Share An Hour Mentoring Program for only one hour a week. We need your assistance this school year and we guarantee that the experience will be a gratifying one for you. For more information please contact Linda Shaffer at (937) 390-9900.
