Project Jericho: Inside the Walls, Outside the Box
 | | Dustin Miller, right, stands with Beth Dixon, from Project Jericho, and Bob Davidson, from the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center. | After being on probation since he was nine years old and spending a year of his life in jail, Dustin Miller will be off probation in two weeks. He credits Project Jericho’s program at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center with helping him find more positive things to do with his art. His story is not unique. Since adding a 45-minute Project Jericho class to the inmate’s daily class rotation, the center has seen less conflict, less self-mutilation and reduced recidivism, which reduces costs. Project Jericho instills a feeling of pride with activities that range from a giant mural to musical performances by visiting artists to dance lessons. The inmates use journaling and poetry to record their progress and feelings. Beth Dixon, from Project Jericho, said all the programs culminate in the opportunity to take a bow, and when you take a bow the chips falls off your shoulder. Representatives from the detention center admit they were skeptical at first but are now strong supporters of the program. After being released from the center, each former inmate has the opportunity to continue at no cost thanks to a scholarship. This outstanding program has gained national recognition and in the last month, Dixon has been contacted by six other counties who want to start a similar program.
