Community Disaster Preparedness
Will you, your family and the community be ready when disaster strikes? It will happen, said Lisa D’Allessandris, Clark County Emergency Management. Clark County has had seven significant events since 2005. Disasters can be natural, technological such as hazardous waste, and man-made such as a terriorist attack. While Clark County may not be a top terriorist target, we do have railroads, bridges and a dam that could collapse and schools where a shooting may occur. Our largest threat is hazardous material since there are approximately 100 sites in the county. A flu pandemic is projected to affect 40-60 percent of the population. Sandy Miller, Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD), talked about the grassroots efforts to support the medical community in the event of a disaster. CCCHD offers free training to volunteers in a medical reserve corp and classes in personal and family preparedness. Help is needed since Clark County has only one medical service person for every 120 citizens, one fire person for every 181 citizens, and one law enforcement person for every 500 citizens. A new initiative known as a Volunteer Reception Center is being started to identify, screen and coordinate volunteers during a disaster. It has been developed in conjunction with Ohio's emergency management leadership to incorporate volunteers into disaster responses.
District Trilogy
Each year, the Rotary District holds this event that informs Rotarians about youth programs, membership and Rotary International. It’s scheduled for August 13, from 6-9pm in Franklin, Ohio. The cost is $15/person. Contact Sue Hebner for more details.
