Transitioning from School to Work and Beyond
Joe Vanuch sees great schools and great opportunities in the Clark County Schools. The government is demanding school districts better prepare students with disabilities to become productive citizens. Vanuch works one-on-one with students in all county high schools to discover their abilities, not disabilities, and help them prepare for the work of work. He coaches them on behaviors such as timeliness and follow-up. The disabilities range from learning disabilities, where students may continue on to higher education, to those with profound needs. Using career assessment tools, Vanuch is part of a team who helps students make appropriate choices for their futures. An in-school program, placement as a volunteer in the workplace and job shadowing are available to the students. Those who need graduation credit can receive one high school credit for every 180 hours of work. Vanuch works closely with MRDD, the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, TAC Industries and local employers to find full-time positions with benefits for his students. Those who are not ready, he brings back to school. A tightening economy and lack of transportation in the county are making his job more difficult. However, Vanuch tells employers “when you hire a student, you hire Vanuch.”
Welcome Kim!
Kim Sandleben, pronounced sand-LEEB-en, has arrived from Germany for his year stay in Springfield. The host student is staying with Virgil and Betty Haynes. We are still looking for one more family to host him. Please contact Monte Zinn, if you can help.
